A little about me – North Carolina Boudoir Photography

Sometimes I get asked questions such as this:

…as well as questions about being scared to lose clients because of who I am.  These are completely legit questions but I have to answer honestly and say that no, I am no longer scared to lose business because of who I really am.  In fact (and not to sound conceited), I am to the point where I can choose who I work with.  I have worked HARD to get to this point, but I’m finally here and it’s amazing.  My point is, clients will either want to work with me if they feel like we’re a great match (yay!) or not if they don’t feel like we are.  My feelings aren’t hurt if someone feels like we can’t work together because they don’t like this or that about me, simply because there are hundreds or thousands more out there that DO want to work with me.  The honest truth is, I want clients that like me and want to work with me for ME.  It makes my job easier, we connect much easier and we’re both much happier in the long run.  If my tattoos, music, Jack Daniels or whatever makes me lose a few clients then by no means are my feelings hurt because in the end, we probably weren’t a good match anyway.

So, with that said, here are a few random things that you probably didn’t know about me.

I am not easily embarrassed. I used to be – big time!  As I’ve gotten older though, I’ve realized life is too short and I like to laugh too much. I’m usually the first person to laugh at myself and here is just one example.  On last Saturday’s shoot I went to step onto the bed and heard a noise and felt a little air on my thigh.  Looked down and the crotch of my jeans had ripped.  Jade saw it immediately and busted out laughing, Amy (a past client and there to assist her friend on her shoot) asked if I farted (she wasn’t sure what we were laughing at) and my client also cracked up.  What else could I do but laugh?  I felt a small patch of wear on the thigh area of my jeans on the way to the shoot and thought to myself “I need to keep an eye on this…” and well, it happened.  Without skipping a beat, Amy (once again as a reminder, a past client and now friend) said “just take them off.  Watch, I’ll take mine off..” and she DID.  And I DID!  Right.  There.  Jade and our client (whom we were now way comfortable with) were cracking up as I pulled my pants back up.  Jade was awesome and offered to go to Old Navy to buy me a new pair of jeans.  All of this was updated live on my facebook page with a photo and more laughs.  I soon had new jeans and while Old Navy’s sizes suck, all of the ladies said they made my butt look awesome so I decided to keep them.

I collect animal skulls: Well, I don’t know if I collect them, but I have a small collection of them.  Growing up on a farm, we often found deer or small animal skulls in the woods and I have always been fascinated by anatomy.  Please don’t let this take place over my absolute love and respect of animals.  I honestly think more of most animals than some people.  hah!  I just think they’re beautiful and unique and interested and I keep them on my bookshelf at home.  My little brother found me a new one yesterday and it’s one of my new favorites!  I’ve even had people bring me a skull they’ve found wrapped in a bag and said “this is gross but I know you like them, so here you go!”  Now THAT is acceptance!

Are you still with me?:)

My favorite animal (tied with cats) is a goat. They’re so fun and playful and actually very smart.  I grew up with lots of them and them and to this day I get excited to see goats.  I posted this video last week on my facebook page because I had to share the happiness.  How can you NOT love goats after seeing this?!  Ps) If you don’t have the Simply Boudoir Facebook page added, you’re obviously missing out on a lot more personal updates and random awesome things!

I’m going through a lifestyle overhaul. It’s nothing too major but I’m paying more attention to what goes into my body as well as keeping a regular workout routine.  I’ve always been a tomboy and loved to play around outside and be physical but since I began my photography business almost all of my time is spent sitting down in front of a computer.  It was really starting to get me down so I decided to make some changes.  Most recently I have started a “diet” that’s not really a diet but just a change in the way I eat.  I consume mostly protein and very few carbs and sugars and since I am eating mostly protein (lots of chicken, salmon, fish, mushrooms, greek yogurts, eggwhites, etc…) I stay fuller longer and have already noticed a big different in my body and how I feel.  I also don’t have to hit the gym as often or as hard since I’m eating much healthier, but it does help clear my mind and make me feel better on my off days.   I am really excited about this change and to see my body morph into a healthier and more fit version of itself.

And here a random behind-the-scenes photo taken this past Sunday at my shoot.  The story behind the photo and a few more will be posted in a few days, but a huge thank you to Sarah of Sadie Higs Photography for capturing it for me!

Wow, this was a lot longer than I had intended!  So there are just a few random facts about me that you may not have known or wanted to know.  And just to answer that first question posted…

“My favorite is probably my phoenix with the newly added Japanese greywash and flowers. I used to feel like I had to hide them but now I don’t. My tattoos are a part of who I am and if anyone hires me, I’m assuming they’ve seen my website where they’ve seen my photos and they’ve seen I have tattoos. They also see that they don’t reflect the job I do or the outcome of my work and they’ve never been an issue. If someone wouldn’t want to hire me because I have tattoos then they wouldn’t be the client I’d want, anyway. I do cover them up at certain shoots, though (weddings in a church) just out of respect for the bride and groom. It’s never been an issue though and I doubt it ever will be.:)
